Education: Shannon is currently a Ph.D. Candidate in the counseling psychology program at Brigham Young University. She earned her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from the University of Nevada Las Vegas where she completed her clinical training at an award-winning training clinic, The PRACTICE. She double majored in psychological science and music for her undergraduate degree at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota, where she split her time between psychology research and performance halls.
Populations: Shannon has worked with young children to geriatric populations and served individuals from various backgrounds, minority status, gender concerns, sexual expression, and religions. She worked extensively with children and adolescents during her master’s program and has worked with college students during the past year.
Clinical Experience: Providing both individual and group therapy, Shannon has experience working with a diverse range of concerns including depression, anxiety, ADHD, suicidality and self-harm, bipolar disorder, school and learning concerns, life transitions, grief and loss, and trauma. Shannon also has experience with psychological assessment of learning concerns, autism spectrum disorder, dementia, and head injury.
Therapeutic Approach: With an emphasis on building a life worth living, Shannon works to draw on your strengths to create an environment that helps you achieve your goals. Being mindful of using evidence-based approaches while tailoring these to you, Shannon works to provide a personalized setting where you can feel free to learn and explore ways to optimize your mental and physical wellbeing. Working from a dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT) approach, Shannon finds it can often be helpful to consider how well one manages difficulties, emotions, relationships, and mindfulness, and works with clients to help make adjustments to these areas as they see fit. Shannon also draws from attachment theory and can help clients explore any patterns they have in their relationships to better understand how to foster positive and supportive relationships. Shannon is also experienced in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and incorporates this into her work.
Personal: Equally happy as a homebody and traveling with her husband, Shannon enjoys learning new things. She recently took up weightlifting and enjoys spending time at home with her two cats, Basil and Chad. Growing up in Wisconsin, she is an avid Packer fan (but doesn’t miss the cold of the frozen tundra). In her free time, she enjoys taking care of her houseplants, re-reading the Harry Potter series, and spending time with her family.
